Argos come close to title…

The Garden Grove High School boys’ volleyball team had its 18-game winning streak snapped by Saddleback Valley Christian in the Southern Section CIF finals on Saturday (May 24).

The Argonauts finished a stellar season with an overall record of 23-3, a Garden Grove League record of 10-0 and a national ranking of 125.

Get ‘em next year, boys.

Memorial Day is NOT Veterans Day

It happens every year: Folks mistake Memorial Day with Veterans Day. We here at the paper have already received press releases from groups planning to celebrate veterans on Memorial Day, which occurs Monday (May 26).

So here’s the deal: We celebrate veterans on Veterans Day. We celebrate FALLEN veterans on Memorial Day.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, start planning your barbecue, or getaway.

Pacifica powers past Cypress

It was billed as the clash of the Titans.

The Pacifica High School girls’ softball team came to Cypress High last week with one goal in mind: to win and avenge an earlier loss this season.

Both teams are outstanding. Cypress is rated in the Top 10 in CIF and Pacifica is rated in the Top 30 in the COUNTRY. In their earlier meeting, Cypress scored more runs on the Mariners than anyone this season: 2. That’s not a typo. I’ll write it again: 2. That’s how dominating Pacifica’s pitchers are.

Final score: Pacifica 5, Cypress 1. Payback.

Vietnamese-Americans remember Fall of Saigon

April 30 marked the 39-year anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. South Vietnamese — many of whom came to America as refugees and settled in Garden Grove and Westminster — remember it as “Black April.”

Check out Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s column about “Black April” in Wednesday’s Orange County News.
