Who will be the Voice of Garden Grove?

Twenty high school students from Garden Grove Unified School District are competing in a vocal sing-off competition for the opportunity to be named the “Voice of Garden Grove.”

The fifth annual competition is modeled after the popular NBC television hit “The Voice” and is hosted by the Garden Grove Community Foundation.

Students perform as an opening act for the City of Garden Grove’s Summer Concert Series held every Thursday through Aug 4. at Eastgate Park, 12001 St Mark St. in Garden Grove. The winner will be announced at the August concert.

The Voice of Garden Grove contestants are competing for an opportunity to win $1,000 – half of which is donated to the winner’s high school choir.

“We value our partnership with the Garden Grove Community Foundation and we are grateful that the foundation provides such a fun outlet for students to showcase their vocal talents,” said Linda Reed, district Board of Education trustee.

Student contestants who performed July 14 include: Katelyn Lopez, Santiago High School; Christine Le, Garden Grove High School; Jenny Nguyen, Pacifica High School; Alondra Pineda, Santiago High School; and Monica Van, La Quinta High School.

On July 28, the line-up includes: Tu-Anh Do, Bolsa Grande High School; Sherry Hu, La Quinta High School; Lucero Matias, Rancho Alamitos High School; Phuong Nguyen, Los Amigos High School; and Vanessa Pineda, Santiago High School.

Aug. 4 contestants are Alyssa Leones, Los Amigos High School; Constance Maldonado, Garden Grove High School; Kenia Miranda, Rancho Alamitos High School; Phillip Nguyen, Bolsa Grande High School; and Kayla Renee Wandalt, Pacifica High School.

Miss California visits Navy ship

Garden Grove’s Bree Morse, outgoing Miss California, recently was special guest of the Navy ship USS Essex (LHD-2) for presentation of performance awards to four crewmembers onboard the San Diego based amphibious assault ship.

Morse received a commemorative ship’s coin from Commanding Officer, Captain Brian J. Quin, U. S. Navy. The popular pageant winner was also treated to a tour of the huge ship, guided by Essex’s Senior Chief Petty Officer Denise Murray and Newport Beach Navy Leaguer Board Officers Chris Chocek and Mark Miller.

Morse presented the special Navy League awards and checks to CS1 Latoya Farrish, HM2 Scott Musolf, AO3 PurnelNkwocha and ABHAN Tyrese Jamison and spent much time talking with many other crew members, posing with them in photos, and signing autographs.

GG has its day at the Fair

July 29 is Garden Grove Day at the Orange County Fair.

Garden Grove leaders will lead fairgoers in singing the National Anthem at 12:30 p.m.

Two dollar discount admission coupons are available for the general public, courtesy of the OC Fair. Coupons can be picked up on the first floor of Garden Grove City Hall, at 11222 Acacia Parkway. The coupon may be used any day that the Fair is open through Aug. 14.

The OC Fair is located at 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa.
